Federal Defender Investigators, Paralegals and Mitigation Specialists A Virtual Series Session 6 – Uncovering and Challenging Fake Digital Evidence
Edited metadata, spoofed phone numbers, manipulated screenshots. It is easier than ever to create fake news evidence or modify real evidence to support a lie. This session will explore potential digital evidence traps in criminal cases and how to avoid them. Using real examples, the presenter will demonstrate how to uncover fraudulent evidence proffered by witnesses and complainants. This presentation will include ways to challenge the prosecution’s evidence and best practices to avoid unwittingly submitting deceptive evidence and narratives.

Jerome D. Greco is the Director of The Legal Aid Society’s Digital Forensics Unit in New York City. Jerome works closely with attorneys and investigators on issues involving electronic surveillance technology, cell phone extractions, location tracking, and facial recognition, among other fields. In the last five years, he has presented over seventy digital forensics and electronic surveillance related CLEs and trainings. Prior to joining the Digital Forensics Unit, Jerome worked as a trial attorney in Legal Aid’s Staten Island and Manhattan criminal defense offices from 2011 to 2016. In addition to his work with technology, Jerome is experienced in litigating freedom of information requests and is an advocate for government transparency.
