According to the New York Times database, the number of inmates and guards known to have been infected with coronavirus at American correctional institutions surpassed 500,000 on Monday, January 4, 2021.  A Times analysis of data from 2,600 prisons, jails and immigration detention centers shows the number of COVID-19 cases reported has risen nearly 84% over the last two months.  Some 88 facilities have had at least 1,000 COVID-19 infections.  The Times database has a search function under "Cases in Jails and Prisons" that shows COVID-19 infections at particiular instutitions.
