The chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, on Monday ordered the suspension for grand juries convening in Pittsburgh, Johnstown and Erie until January 4, 2021 (article available here). The court made the ruling because of the spike in COVID-19 cases locally and nationally.

Grand juries had been previously halted in the spring for several weeks but had resumed through the summer and fall. The court stated national, state and local governments had since reissued guidance regarding the need for "extraordinary nationwide measures" to restrict person-to-person contact and stop the spread of the virus.

Federal courts in Pennsylvania and across the country have been operating with skeleton crews since March, with most proceedings handled by video. All trials in the Western District of Pennsylvania have been suspended.
