The number of prisoners executed in the United States has been on a decline for a number of years.  However, in an article titled A Long Decline In Executions Takes a Detour, the Marshall Project Reports that recent court rulings and start-stop access to lethal injection drugs is likely to result in more executions in 2017 than in 2016.   If this occurs, this will be the first year since 2009 that there were more executions than the year before.
