President Joe Biden announced two new circuit court nominees Wednesday, tapping Andre B. Mathis for the Sixth Circuit and Judge Alison J. Nathan for the Second Circuit (article available here).

Mathis would become the first Black man confirmed to the Sixth Circuit in 24 years, according to the administration. Judge Nathan would be the second openly LGBT woman to serve on a federal circuit court. The first is Judge Beth Robinson, who was confirmed to the Second Circuit earlier this year.

Judge Nathan has served on the District Court for the Southern District of New York since 2011 and previously worked as a special counsel to the solicitor general of New York and in the White House counsel's office.

Mathis is a partner in a Memphis, Tennessee, law firm, where he has worked since last year. Before that, he had been at another firm since 2007. Mathis has primarily practiced in commercial and government litigation and criminal defense work, according to the White House statement.
