On January 19, 2018, the United States Sentencing Commission announced its Proposed 2018 Amendments to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.  As the Commission’s press release makes plain, the proposed amendments focus on new classes of synthetic drugs and increases to fentanyl penalties.  Various technical or clarifying amendments were also proposed, including two application issues relating to the immigration guideline, USSG 2L1.2.  A “reader friendly” version of the proposed amendments is here.  According to the Commission:

The proposed amendments and issues for comment will be subject to a public comment period running through March 6, 2018 and a reply comment period running through March 28, 2018. Comments during the reply phase are limited to issues raised in the original comment period.
